Mr. Harry Nutt and a Hub
“Robert, I’m not even sure how to begin…
We need to talk.”
“About?”
“The kid who got in a fight yesterday says his dad put me under drug lord protection.”
“No. That’s ridiculous.”
“I thought that’s what you’d say…”
“Oh! Something funny happened today.
My class was complete chaos today.
At least the first half.”
“They’re putting that stupid fiber optics box into my room.
The kids won’t leave it alone in the hall.
And the tech guy was in there the whole time I’m teaching.”
“Then, this announcement comes over my intercom…”
I cupped my hands around my mouth to make it sound dramatic.
“Mr. Harry Nutt, Mr. Harry Nutt, please call the office immediately.
Then, they just leave the channel open like they expected me to reply.”
“That can’t be a real name.”
“That’s what I thought, too!
But I had gotten a memo from the office earlier saying I was getting a second teacher in my room during science lab.
It was the same name on the memo.”
“I bet the kids had a time with that name.”
“It wasn’t just the kids.
The poor tech guy laughed so hard, I thought he was going to lose his lunch!”
“His name is John. He’s from Washington State.
He’s going to be in my room for the next week or so working on those wires.”
“They are switching the whole base over to fiber optics. Weird, seeing how we are pulling out in ’99.”
“Alec said they have plans to turn the base into a college.”
“I heard they may relocate the University of Panama here.”
“I’m glad about it all.”
“Are you staying for dinner?” I asked.
“Yeah. Let’s pick out a movie tonight.”
