Chapter 74
And… He’s Whistling
“Sara, it’s 11:00. Are you really going to make your father wait until 1:00?”
“I didn’t ask him to come early.”
“And I didn’t ask him to sit right outside the house.”
“I don’t even want to go. He’s trying to control me. He can wait.”
And that knock at the door is him.
Of course.
“Robert, why don’t you come back at 1:00?”
“Make her come out now. This is ridiculous.”
“It’s ridiculous to expect her to leave early. Just come back.”
“She’s thirteen! She can leave early—and I have nowhere else to go.”
He’s getting loud—landlords next door, kids in the living room.
“Making a scene isn’t going to get you your way with her.”
Joseph was leaning against the corner of the house.
And… he was whistling.
Robert had noticed.
Where did that sixteen-pound sledgehammer come from?
My eyes followed it as it swung in slow circles—over his head, around his back.
Joseph was smiling.
He walked up onto the porch. Directly between Robert and me.
“Do we have a problem here?”
“No.”
Robert went to sit in his car.
Ten minutes.
Then he left.
And came back at 1:00.
Joseph looked out the side window.
“Problem solved.”
