Chapter 04
It Stays a Morgue

Author’s Note:

Up until this point, every word of this book has been a record of my direct experience. 100% memory. But memory only tells the story of what happened to me. It doesn’t show the invisible bureaucratic machinery.

Logic dictates that before an order is given, a document is born. The following scene is a piece of speculative history—an extrapolated document from my imagination. It is the only way to show you the decision that was waiting for me inside that school.

“Staff Sergeant.”

“Yes, Sir?”

A pause.

“Draft a memo to the high school principal. You’ll have to look his name up.

“Per request of the Panamanian government, the request for a new air conditioning system for the ground-level classroom, formerly the morgue, has been denied.

“Occupy and utilize the room as currently equipped.

“Date and stamp my name on it.

“Ensure delivery is made in person.

“He’s interviewing teachers today.”

“Yes, Sir.”
